Patent Search

What is a patent search?

A patent search should be conducted by the Applicant before filing for a patent. The objective of a patent search is usually to make sure that your invention is novel and is not similar to an already existing invention.

As the criteria of a patentable invention is novelty, it does well for a patent applicant to get the information related to the invention from the public domain. This includes going through the already registered patents to compare the existing documents and decide the patentability of the invention.

When a patent search is conducted for the purposes of filing the patent specifically, it can be called a patentability search. By conducting this search, the applicant would be aware of the closest similar invention that might exist and would be able to refute any objection that might arise during the examination of a patent.
